LINCOLN — President Donald Trump weighed in on two Nebraska congressional races with the 2026 midterms still a year away.
Trump — via separate posts on his Truth Social platform — endorsed Nebraska Republican U.S. Reps. Adrian Smith and Mike Flood.
In Smith’s case, the endorsement could help Smith, of Gering, further separate himself from 3rd Congressional District GOP primary challenger David Huebner, a former border patrol agent, in a district that includes most of central and western Nebraska and some of the eastern edges of the state. The winner of the GOP primary will likely face Democrat Becky Stille in the general election.
Smith represents the state’s most conservative district. He has been in Congress since 2007. Before that, Smith served in the Legislature from 1999 to 2007. He is on the House Ways and Means Committee, Congress’ tax-writing committee.
Flood, who represents the 1st Congressional District in Lincoln and other parts of eastern Nebraska, has no Republican challenger, although some in GOP circles have discussed the possibility that former U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry might be interested in considering running for his old job. Flood replaced Fortenberry after Fortenberry resigned following a criminal conviction in California that was later overturned on a technicality and dropped by the Trump administration.
Flood, assuming he remains unopposed, would face Democratic challenger Eric Moyer. Flood has been in Congress since 2021. He was a speaker of the Legislature from 2007 to 2013 and returned to the Legislature a second time. Flood recently became the chair of the House GOP’s Main Street Caucus. The 1st District comprises 12 Nebraska counties, including Lancaster County. But Lincoln’s heavily Democratic lean is drowned out by more conservative rural regions.
The two Trump posts are similar. The president pointed to Flood being a “successful businessman” and “highly respected speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.” He touted Smith for being a member of the “powerful Ways & Means Committee.” Trump credited both for cutting taxes and regulations and for keeping the border secure.
The posts about Smith and Flood end with Trump writing that both have his “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election.”
