Meeting Begins Wednesday

The Daily Record

The 2017 Nebraska State Bar Association Annual Meeting kicks off three days of seminars, award ceremonies and social events this week. It runs from Wednesday, Oct. 11, through Friday, Oct. 13, at the Embassy Suites in La Vista.
This year’s meeting includes many exciting opportunities for you to make new connections, fulfill your yearly continuing legal education (CLE) requirement, and make a difference in the lives of others, according to Executive Director Liz Neeley. She gave a rundown of some of the upcoming events:
Wednesday evening will feature the annual cocktail reception, “In Honor of Your Honors.” Thursday’s Networking Lunch is an informal event with no agenda other than conversation and fellowship.
The Third Annual Public Service Project on Thursday afternoon offers the opportunity to work as a team to package 10,000 meals to help feed some of the 842 million people across the globe suffering from hunger. Spend an hour or so having fun and enjoying each other’s company while we do good for others.
The Thursday night celebration, dubbed “OctoBARfest,” will offer an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and trivia games.
And don’t forget the Legacy Lunch on Friday, where we recognize our colleagues who are celebrating their 25th and 50th years of practice, and remember our colleagues who have passed away. New this year, the NSBA is offering a New Associate Hiring Fair. Hiring? Looking for a position? Register soon to participate in this interview event on Friday afternoon.
Continuing Legal Education
The 2017 NSBA Annual Meeting includes nearly 40 CLE programs and has been accredited in Nebraska and Iowa for 20.0 CLE hours, including 9.0 hours of ethics, Some highlights include nationally renowned lawyer coach and attorney, Roy Ginsburg, presenting, “Career and Law Firm Transitions: Challenges and Opportunities” and “Retain Your Clients: A Roadmap to Effective, Ethical, Client Service.” Also, Catherine Sanders Reach from the Chicago Bar Association will be presenting, “Tech Talks Lunch: 60 Tech Tips in 60 Minutes” and “Information Management and Efficient Law Practice.”
Chief Standing Bear’s
Long Journey for Justice
Thursday’s General Session speaker Joe Starita is an award winning investigative reporter and Nebraska native.
Starita will share the powerful, compelling story that reached its climax in Omaha 130 years ago – that of Chief Standing Bear’s quest to show that an Indian “is a person within the meaning of the law” with the “same inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as the more fortunate white race.”
The session from 3:45 to 5 pm on Thursday, Oct. 12, for a 1-hour CLE seminar, “Chief Standing Bear’s Long Journey for Justice.” The story explores fundamental issues of citizenship, constitutional protection, cultural identity and the nature of democracy. And it is a story that illustrates how the nation’s delicate system of checks and balances worked almost exactly as the Founding Fathers envisioned. This program is FREE to all attorneys and includes a 1-hour CLE.
The session will also include the presentation of some of NSBA’s awards recognizing individuals for exemplary service.
