George Santos Pleads Guilty, Acknowledging Lies And Blaming Ambition For Conning His Way To Congress

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — George Santos, who spun lies about his life into an 11-month stint in Congress, pleaded guilty Monday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in a case that led to his expulsion from office. He blamed his ambition for clouding his judgment and said he was “flooded with deep regret.”

Tina Peters, Former Mesa County, Colorado, Clerk, Found Guilty On Seven Counts

A Mesa County jury found Tina Peters guilty Monday on seven of 10 criminal charges related to a security breach that occurred in the spring of 2021 in the elections office she oversaw as the Mesa County clerk and recorder.

The jury returned the verdict just hours after closing arguments.

Kansas, 14 Other State Attorneys General File Suit Challenging Health Insurance For DACA Recipients

TOPEKA — Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach filed a lawsuit Thursday on behalf of 15 states, including Nebraska, in an attempt to stop President Joe Biden from expanding health care access to DACA recipients by making them eligible for participation in the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplace.

It’s not surprising but it is disappointing. Nebraska has joined 14 other states to file a lawsuit to block President Biden’s plan to extend the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, to the 600,000 DACA residents currently living in America.

UCLA Can't Allow Protesters To Block Jewish Students From Campus, Judge Rules

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the University of California, Los Angeles, cannot allow pro-Palestinian protesters to block Jewish students from accessing classes and other parts of campus.

The preliminary injunction marks the first time a U.S. judge has ruled against a university over the demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war on college campuses earlier this year.

Nebraska, Iowa AGs Part Of 11-State Push For EPA Rule On Farm Chemicals

OMAHA — Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers and Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird joined two farmers and state agricultural officials Wednesday in drawing a line in fertile soil.

The two ag-led states were among 11 states urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to stop a patchwork of state labeling efforts on farm chemicals.

Judge Rules Against RFK Jr. In Fight To Be On New York’s Ballot, Says He Is Not A State Resident

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A judge ruled Monday that independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s name should not appear on New York’s ballot, saying that he falsely claimed a New York residence on nominating petitions despite living in California.

Omaha Council Adopts Code Of Conduct For Its Members, Despite Public Objections

OMAHA — A “code of conduct” for the city council of Nebraska’s largest city was established Tuesday with a 6-1 vote by the council.

In a related action, the council also voted 6-1 to place on the November election ballot an amendment that would change the City Charter by adding three more reasons City Council members could forfeit their elected seat.

Cattle Ranchers Deserve A Break On Onerous Property Taxes

As Nebraskans we’ve been spoon-fed buzz words such as “pro-business economy,” “strong economic climate” and of course the idea of “an even better Nebraska for future generations” from lawmakers who are championing policies that will inevitably harm our state’s top economic driver – the beef cattle industry. There is no reality where Nebraska’s economy can progress and truly thrive while the property tax crisis is breaking ranch families.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge on Monday ruled that Google's ubiquitous search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation, a seismic decision that could shake up the internet and hobble one of the world's best-known companies.
