LINCOLN — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen pivoted Monday from his own property tax relief proposal to embrace a hodgepodge plan emerging from a broad swath of special session bills.

Pillen acknowledged the shift during a news conference with law enforcement leaders and firefighters announcing that the new plan would not cap local spending on public safety.

LINCOLN — Voting rights advocates sued Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen on Monday, arguing that he unconstitutionally instructed county election officials to ignore a new state law letting people convicted of felonies vote after serving their sentence.

LINCOLN — A flurry of new state laws took effect Friday, establishing new policies for firearms in small schools, launching Parole Board reforms and expanding open government and voting rights.

Of the 150 bills signed into law this year, more than 100 became effective last week. Some took effect in the spring while others won’t get the green light until July 1, 2025.
