When You Could Only Learn English

In 1919, following WWI some anti-European – more specifically anti-German – sentiments, many states enacted laws in which it was illegal to teach school children foreign languages. In our own state of Nebraska, the law read that no language other than English could be taught in public or private schools.

When A Boilermaker Was Outlawed

It wasn’t until an odd law that was still on the books as recently as ten years ago, that banned the mixing of liquor and beer was repealed, that the boilermaker was able to make its lawful return to bars across the state.

Hastings, NE is a city in the southern part of Nebraska, two and a half hours away from Omaha. It has a population of around 25,000 and is famous for the invention of Kool-Aid in 1927.

Leigh, Nebraska Is An Un-Holey Town

Leigh, NE - It is illegal to sell donut holes (circa late 1800’s-1997).

This one has appeared on many websites and trivia games as a little known weird fact. And it’s not hard to see why, as it appears completely arbitrary and puritanical, not to mention annoyingly hard to research.
