City, County, Community Awards Celebrate MLK Legacy
The City of Omaha and Douglas County recently recognized employees and citizens who have made a difference in the community.
The local governments make award presentations annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to recognize people who honor King through their work. This year’s event, held Jan. 15 at the Omaha-Douglas Civic Center and livestreamed due to the pandemic, recognized two employees and three community members.
For the employee awards, the city honored Omaha Police Lt. Sherie Thomas while Douglas County recognized Public Information Officer Leia Baez.
“It is always an honor to recognize our employees and their service on the job and in our community,” Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said in a news release. “In an extraordinary year, Lt. Thomas and Ms. Baez have provided critical communications with our citizens, especially related to the COVID-19 pandemic and responses to public protests last summer.”
Thomas has been working as an officer in the Omaha Police Department since 1998. An Omaha native, she has worked in many roles – including school resource officer, uniformed patrol and internal affairs.
