City Opts Not to Renew Lease With Love’s Jazz
The City of Omaha recently announced it would not renew the lease for Love’s Jazz and Arts Center at 2510 N. 24th St.
The city will instead lease the space for the North Omaha center to the new North 24th Street Business Improvement District.
“Love’s Jazz is an important piece of North 24th Street’s history and we want to help preserve that legacy,” Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said in a release. “We are confident that the North 24th Street BID will provide the opportunity for Love’s Jazz to once again celebrate music, education and the history of North Omaha.”
The city first leased the space to the North Omaha Love’s Jazz Cultural Arts and Humanities Complex Inc. in 2005 for $1 for 10 years. The lease was extended in 2015 for five additional years.
In a news release, city officials said the nonprofit violated its lease agreement and the organization’s board rejected a proposal to reduce its costs and share space with the business improvement district.
The city said the decision had the support of Preston Love Jr. and council member Ben Gray. In a city news release, Gray said the move to lease the space to the business improvement district was “a good first step.”
“The North 24th Street Business Improvement District will ensure that the Love’s Jazz and Arts Center remains a viable space for the community, while honoring the jazz prowess of Preston Love,” said BID board president LaVonya Goodwin.
