Former NSBA President Recognized With Professionalism Award
Linda Crump, a lawyer, administrator, public servant and professor, was honored last week with the Nebraska State Bar Association President’s Professionalism Award.
Now retired, Crump’s career was centered around professionalism and leadership.
She served as the Director of the Office of Equity, Access, and Diversity Programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Crump served in her position at UNL for 25 years before retiring in June 2014. She also taught at the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she earned her J.D. in 1990.
At the NSBA, Crump has a long and renowned history. She was the first person of color elected to chair the House of Delegates. In 2006, she became the second woman and first person of color to serve as the president of the bar association.
Crump co-established the NSBA Leadership Academy, a facet of the organization that encourages lawyers in their third to 15th year of practice to better their leadership skills through monthly educational seminars.
Crump is responsible for “mentoring and encouraging countless lawyers” to seek out leadership opportunities within the profession through the academy, including current President Steven Mattoon, according to a news release.
In 1999, the Minority and Justice Task Force and Implementation Committee was formed to “examine issues of racial and ethnic fairness within the Nebraska court and legal systems.”
Crump became the co-chair in 2003, working to implement the recommendations set forth to facilitate diversity and inclusion within the profession.
Fittingly, she also served as the chair of the NSBA’s Standing Committee on Professionalism.
Outside of UNL and the bar, Crump has been active as a board member of a myriad of organizations, including the Nebraska Arts Council, Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs and the Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women.
Recently, Crump retired from her position as a trustee of the Cooper Foundation, where she chaired the Research Committee, in 2018. The foundation provides grants to nonprofits in Nebraska with a priority area of Lincoln and Lancaster County.
