Nebraska Law Dean Recognized for Fostering Diversity in Legal Profession
Each year, the Nebraska State Bar Association honors a firm, organization or individual for their promotion of diversity within the legal profession with the NSBA Diversity Award.
This year, Anna Shavers, the associate dean of diversity and inclusion at the University of Nebraska College of Law, will receive the award for her expertise, as demonstrated by her wide course offerings and her on-campus work to uplift Black and multicultural law students.
Shavers is an expert in immigration law, administrative law and issues of gender, race and class within the law. She serves as the Cline Williams Professor of Citizenship Law. Her primary interest area is immigration and the ways in which gender issues intersect.
Shavers attended Central State University in Ohio for her undergraduate degree before continuing onto the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she obtained her master’s degree in business. In 1976, she graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota School of Law with her J.D.
Before landing in Nebraska, Shavers worked as an associate at a private firm in Minneapolis and as an associate clinical professor at the University of Minnesota, where she established the law school’s first immigration clinic.
Shavers became an assistant professor at the Nebraska Law in 1989. She worked her way up the ranks, becoming a tenured professor and endowed chair. She has also served as the school’s interim dean.
Outside the classroom, she serves as faculty advisory to the Black Law Student Association and the Multi-Cultural Legal Society. She has also served as a board member of the Midwestern People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference and the co-chair of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking.
Through her myriad of roles, Shavers has shown a devotion to inspiring and educating a diverse group of future lawyers.
