Sarpy County Teen Court Raising Funds at Chipotle
Papillion – Buying a burrito could solve more problems than dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Sarpy County Teen Court will hold a fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Settler’s Creek Chipotle at 9820 S. 71st Plaza, Suite 117.
To participate, tell the cashier that you are supporting the Sarpy County Teen Court. The store has pledged to give 33% of proceeds to support the program.
“Teen Court gives teenagers who have committed a misdemeanor crime a chance to learn from their mistakes without the high cost and stigma of a criminal record,” according to a post on the county’s website, sarpy.com. “It’s a positive experience meant to divert youth away from a pattern of criminal behavior.”
The program is offered for offenses such as shoplifting, criminal mischief, theft, minor in possession, assault and trespassing. Participation is voluntary, and participants are screened by diversion officers. To participate, the juvenile must admit responsibility for the offense and choose to go before their peers to face the consequences of their actions.
The program uses teenage volunteers from local middle and high schools to act as jurors, bailiffs and attorneys. Volunteers serve their community while learning about the legal system.
