Signing Off, Bidding a Fond Farewell to Ralston Community
This will be my last column in this space.
I will be moving on to be the sports editor for a new online news outlet called Nebraska Sunrise News set to launch Jan. 15.
I have enjoyed getting to know the Ralston community better and hope I was able to share some stories that mattered to you.
A special thanks to Ralston Public Schools Director of External Relations & Engagement Jim Frederick, who went above and beyond in assisting in any way with many stories you’ve read in these pages about RPS over the last several months.
While I will be leaving the Daily Record in a couple weeks, you may still see my byline for a little while, as I will still have some stories left to be published.
As always, thank you for reading.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled column.
Winter Sports
With all fall sports sans unified bowling done for Ralston, attention turns to winter sports.
The NSAA has mandated Monday, Nov. 15, as the start of winter practice and Thursday, Dec. 2, as the first day allowed for winter sports contests. Official schedules will be posted to nsaahome.org.
Omaha Lancers
The Omaha Lancers are hosting a Military Appreciation Night tonight, Friday, Nov. 12, one day after Veterans Day. Before the start of Friday’s game against Sioux Falls at 7:05 p.m., the Lancers will pay tribute to Cpl. Daegan Page, an Omaha native and hockey fanatic, who was one of 13 U.S. Service Members who died in an attack at Kabul Airport during the Afghan evacuations this August.
Visiting Angels of Omaha chose the family after learning of Page’s affinity for hockey.
Prior to the game, Page’s family will participate in a ceremonial puck drop on the ice and will be presented with an honorary Lancers sweater inscribed with his name. Following the tribute, they will be seated together in the Visiting Angels box suite.
Through 12 games of a 62-game regular season slate, the Lancers sit in fifth place in the Western Conference with a record of 6-4-2-0 (wins, losses, overtime loss, shootout loss).
Omaha enters this weekend’s home-and-home two-game series against Sioux Falls riding a two-game win streak after sweeping Fargo last weekend by scores of 3-1 and 5-4 in overtime.
Forward Garrett Wright leads Omaha in points with 12 on four goals and eight assists, while fellow forward Alex Bump has nine (four goals, five assists).
Doors open at 6 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at lancers.com/buytickets.
