Virtual Fall Luncheon Features Activist, Equal Justice Awards
Low-wage essential workers in Nebraska have kept the economy afloat since the pandemic began, yet they face severe risks and hardships.
Legal Aid of Nebraska’s virtual Friends of Legal Aid Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 30, will focus on a future that depends upon a recognition of our continuing interdependence on each other, where we find strength, safety and support. Advance registration is required to view the free event.
The free virtual luncheon event will feature a speech and Q&A session by storyteller and community curator Mia Birdsong, author of “How We Show Up: Reclaiming Family, Friendship, and Community.” Birdsong shows us that what separates us isn’t only the ever-present — and very real — injustices, but also our denial of interdependence and the need for belonging.
Birdsong will connect today’s continuing economic and housing crisis facing low-wage essential workers and others “on the margins” to the need for increased free legal assistance, including from Legal Aid, as well as the long-term challenges of insuring economic security for all.
As Legal Aid has been at the forefront of the continuing battle with COVID-19 since March 2020, providing free legal assistance to thousands of low-income Nebraskans disproportionately hit by financial hardship and disease, its staff has seen firsthand just how hard these Nebraskans have stood their ground and fought back.
This annual event will highlight the contributions of those who support and protect the interests of these Nebraskans. The annual Equal Justice Awards will be given to community and corporate partners, law firms, and attorneys for their work to help achieve greater and more equal justice for all, especially for low-wage essential workers during today’s COVID-19 public health crisis.
