LINCOLN — The Nebraska Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday in a lawsuit seeking to protect a new school voucher program for private K-12 education from repeal by ballot measure.

The court must decide by the Friday deadline for Secretary of State Bob Evnen to finalize the Nov. 5 ballot. Evnen’s brief asked justices to decide the constitutional question, not punt.

WASHINGTON — Democratic lawmakers and a coalition of civil rights leaders Tuesday urged Congress to reform the filibuster in order to pass voting rights legislation next Congress.

“Voting rights, succinctly put, are preservative of all other rights,” U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Georgia Democrat, said at a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol.

WEST POINT, Nebraska — Gov. Jim Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture announced new regulations Thursday against “lab-grown meat” or “fake meat,” with Pillen eyeing 2025 legislation to prohibit the sale of such products within the state.

DENVER (AP) — A man sitting in his van after fixing a coffee machine inside a supermarket in the college town of Boulder was the first person killed. In just over a minute, nine more people died in a barrage of gunfire inside and outside the store in 2021 as the shooter targeted and pursued people who were moving.

Three’s A Crowd In Nebraska Abortion Amendment Lawsuits

LINCOLN — Two was company and three is now a crowd of last-minute lawsuits filed in Nebraska against competing abortion amendment proposals.

More than 20 doctors supporting an abortion-rights amendment sued Friday to press the Nebraska Supreme Court to remove neither abortion amendment from the ballot or pull them both.
