With all the talk of busted brackets, game-winning shots, point spreads and Cinderellas, it was easy to miss the eye-popping offer University of Michigan star forward Yaxel Lendeborg claimed to have received during the first weekend of March Madness.

Lendeborg told The Associated Press that the University of Kentucky had dangled between US$7 million and $9 million to entice him to transfer there in 2025.

A Mountain Hideout And Aircraft Under Fire: US Carries Out Daring Rescue Of Service Member In Iran

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:00am

The United States pulled off a daring rescue of two aviators whose fighter jet was shot down by Iran, plucking the pilot from behind enemy lines before setting off a complicated extraction of the second service member who hid deep in the mountains as Tehran called for Iranians to help capture him.

The CIA looked to throw off Iran’s government before the crew member was found, launching a deception campaign to spread word inside the Islamic Republic that the U.S. had already located him.

‘HERstory Month’ Event Features Women Who Help Shape Nebraska

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:00am

OMAHA — Lucille and Ethel and 100 Nebraska women trailblazers were on display Friday at an Omaha event celebrating “HERstory Month.”

In a touch of creativity, Lucille and Ethel are names that Catherine Baker and Angela Bosak gave to a pair of mannequins they used to bring to life a collection of women they said help tell the state’s story.

They dressed the mannequins in vintage attire purchased for a few dollars at a thrift store, and on the hoop skirts pinned a photo of each of the 100 women. An online book tells a bit about each.

Knowing their father was in his final hours, Roger Steele and other family members didn't expect to discuss organ donation. After all, Dale Steele, a World War II veteran, was almost 101 years old. Surely, he had nothing that could be used to save another person's life.

Then a representative from Live On Nebraska, an organ donation clearinghouse, approached the Steeles.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The people who toiled night and day to put astronauts on the moon during Apollo are thrilled that NASA is finally going back. They just wish these Artemis moonshots had happened sooner while more of Apollo’s workforce was still alive.

Now in their 80s and 90s, the dwindling survivors of NASA’s greatest generation would also like to see more enthusiasm for Artemis.

At 79, The World’s Leading Crane Conservationist Has No Plans To Slow Down — Or Miss March In Nebraska

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 04/01/2026 - 12:00am
As they do every night at sunset during their March midmigration stop in Nebraska's Central Platte region, thousands of sandhill cranes flew to overnight roosting spots on river sandbars. This group chose to settle March 24 west of the visitor and education center at Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary southwest of Gibbon.

ALDA — The world’s largest gathering of cranes draws people from around the world to south-central Nebraska each March.

Some simply enjoy watching sandhill cranes dance in cornfields and on river sandbars. Some listen to the chorus of purrs, ticks and woots.

More serious “birders” hope to glimpse a flash of bright white amid all the gray feathers — confirmation that endangered whooping cranes have joined the sandhill flocks.

A Pet‑Friendly Homeless Shelter Pilot Reduced The Rate Of Homelessness Among The People It Helped In California

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 03/18/2026 - 12:00am

When homeless shelters allow people to stay with their dogs and other pets, more unhoused people become more willing to stay in a shelter.

That’s what my team at the University of Southern California’s Homelessness Policy Research Institute learned when we evaluated California’s Pet Assistance and Support Program.
