Gretna Community Foundation Accepting Grant Requests

Gretna, Neb. – Gretna Community Foundation is accepting grant requests of up to $5,000 from 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.  Organizations must provide services to individuals residing in, and the grant proceeds must be used within, the City of Gretna, and/or the Gretna School District to be considered for support.

Costs Of Incarceration Rise As Inflation Squeezes Inmates, Families

Across the nation, prison commissaries are raising prices on items that many consider basic necessities — from deodorant to fresh fruit — that are not provided by the state department of corrections. The markups come as decades-high inflation is also squeezing inmates’ families, making it harder for them to help.

Local Nonprofit Tackles Food Insecurity

The USDA found that one in eight Americans suffer from food insecurity, which is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food to be healthy, usually due to finances not being consistent or a lack of access to healthy meals. In 2021 alone, 12.5% of households with families, including children, reportedly suffered from food insecurity. In Omaha alone, one (1) in five (5) kids go to bed hungry every night.

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns Too Often Overlook Those With Metastatic Breast Cancer – Here’s How They Can Do Better

Is there anyone who isn’t aware of breast cancer?

Since 1985, cancer-related nonprofits, along with pharmaceutical firms and other businesses, have sponsored an international campaign to observe October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” During these weeks, the public is bombarded with awareness and education messaging featuring the campaign’s symbol, a pink ribbon.

UNL Students Explore Democracy On Campus, Join National Efforts

LINCOLN – On Sept. 15, hundreds of students across the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications participated in the national Democracy Day effort to raise awareness of threats facing American democracy.

Joining forces with over 350 news organizations, UNL student journalists published pro-democracy stories on the Nebraska News Service website.

OMAHA — Tanya Gifford of Lift Up Sarpy County was thrilled this summer to learn that her nonprofit was awarded $1 million to help ward off homelessness in a community still pained by the pandemic.

Lincoln Faith-Based Nonprofit Enforces Its Ministry Standards

LINCOLN — City Impact, a faith-based Lincoln youth nonprofit, has recently lost staff and volunteers upset over a set of ministry standards that states, in part, that any sexual relationship beyond sex in a heterosexual marriage “constitute sexual immorality.”

Study To Measure Health Benefits Of Girls Inc. Programs

Rebecca Slotkowski, a student in the MD/PhD program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), received National Institutes of Health funding for a two-year study that will measure the physical and cardiovascular health impact that Girls Inc. has on its young participants.
