LINCOLN — President Joe Biden awarded a Medal of Valor on Friday (January 3rd) to the Lincoln Police Department sergeant who jumped into a frigid pond in February 2023 to save a woman from drowning in her car.

In a bit of linguistic gymnastics, a number of states have now banned book bans in public libraries and public schools.

Nebraska should be next in banning book bans. We’ve already hitched the Big Red Wagon to other states in lawsuits from voter registration to student loan debt and to federal regulatory authority. Although not a lawsuit, why not join this book club?

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's new government started an ambitious project on Monday to fight malnutrition by feeding nearly 90 million children and pregnant women that is expected to cost $28 billion through 2029, although critics question whether the program is affordable.

NEW YORK (AP) — CES, the annual trade show of all things tech, is upon us.

The multi-day event, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, kicks off this week in Las Vegas — where swaths of the latest gadgets and advances across industries like personal tech, transportation, health care, sustainability and more are set to be on display. And, like last year, artificial intelligence is everywhere you look.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY – In a small office, Abdikadir Moalim translates work documents from English to Somali, helping a Tyson employee who needs to take off work to visit her sick mother in Africa.

Tacked to the wall is a poster of the Somali coat of arms – two leopards on either side of the country’s flag. A dry erase board breaking down English vowel sounds is propped against a shelf.

As members of the Nebraska Legislature pack their bags for next month’s annual government gathering at the Capitol, each surely will have a to-do list in tow: bills or brainstorms or big ideas they hope the other 48 souls in the chamber will find palatable. More important, however, is whether said lists solve problems and enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans.
