TURNER STATION, Md. (AP) — As the dust settled after the deadly collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, as the initial shock wore off and the breaking news coverage subsided, residents of this tiny peninsula found themselves facing an uncertain future.

OMAHA — A roughly 30-acre area just west of the main University of Nebraska Medical Center campus has a lot going on, including a sprawling innovation hub and a six-story research and office building under construction.

It now has a new name: the EDGE District.

LINCOLN — A pandemic-related program set up nearly three years ago to help struggling Nebraska homeowners has wrapped up — and 3,094 applicants ultimately received a share of the $50 million federal allotment.

The average amount of emergency aid per recipient was $14,834. The maximum someone could get through the Nebraska Homeowner Assistance Fund was $40,000.

OMAHA — Set to rise in one of Nebraska’s oldest and changing urban neighborhoods is a 51-unit rental project aimed at keeping lower income residents from being priced out of midtown Omaha.

Not far away, a pair of obsolete downtown office buildings, each over a century old, are to be rehabbed into a total of 56 rent-restricted apartments on top of street-level commercial space.

Millions of Americans have been watching with growing alarm as their homeowners insurance premiums rise and their coverage shrinks. Nationwide, premiums rose 34%  between 2017 and 2023, and they continued to rise in 2024 across much of the country.

To add insult to injury, those rates go even higher if you make a claim – as much as 25% if you claim a total loss of your home.
