Study Ranks NE Among Top 10 States For Risky Housing Due To Big Corporate Investors

LINCOLN — A new study ranked Nebraska among the top 10 states in the nation for risky housing conditions related to a heavy influence of corporate investors.

The Private Equity Stakeholder Project, a nonprofit watchdog, released its first state-by-state “risk index” aimed at informing policymakers about problems that can arise from imbalanced investment by big private equity groups.

Pillen Confirms No Loss Of Life In NE From Friday Storms, But Hundreds Lost Homes

OMAHA — Gov. Jim Pillen joined leaders from the Omaha, Bennington, Elkhorn and Waterloo areas in thanking Nebraskans for listening to weather forecasts that warned them to take shelter during Friday’s storms.

“It is an extraordinary miracle that we’ve had this kind of a cell come through, and no categories (of serious injuries), and no loss of life,” he said.

WASHINGTON — A majority of U.S Supreme Court justices Monday seemed inclined to side with an Oregon town’s law that bans homeless people from sleeping outdoors, in a case that could have broad implications for local ordinances related to homelessness across the country.

$62 Million Federal Grant Is Expected To Usher In New Era Of Solar Power Use Across Nebraska

LINCOLN — A $62 million federal grant awarded Monday to a Nebraska nonprofit is expected to launch a new era of solar energy use across the state, making it more accessible and affordable to a wider audience.

The “Solar for All” grant, on a practical level, is to install power systems for more than 9,000 historically disadvantaged Nebraska households that stand to save at least 20% in monthly utilities costs.

OMAHA — Responding to a growing demand from students, the University of Nebraska’s main medical training campus is diving into new territory: building new on-campus student housing.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center hopes to self-finance a $66 million residential complex that would rise six stories southeast of 39th Street and Dewey Avenue, on the northeastern edge of its midtown Omaha home base.
