A Schoolyard Courtroom in D.C.?

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 08/06/2026 - 12:00am

After a judge has given a lawyer an order to produce files that he or she has, has any team of attorneys ever replied, “lol, no bro. We are good over here with what you have.” Shoot, I dunno myself; I don't practice law. Would refusing such an order to procure existing documents make a difference if it was a small-town judge or U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan? Last month, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche was sued by journalist Katie Phang in Washington, D.C. for his continued failure to release all of the Epstein files, as was –and is– required by Congress. The judge agreed with Ms.

HOAs Are Often Barriers To Sustainable Landscaping And Solar Energy – Here’s How They Could Be Bridges Instead

If you build a house in the United States today, there’s a good chance you’ll be living under the dictates of a neighborhood homeowners association – roughly two out of every three new homes are in an HOA, as are a third of existing homes.

Some of these HOAs have evolved to encourage environmentally friendly yards, particularly in the desert Southwest, but many more throw up barriers to sustainability, even in communities where water is becoming more scarce, wildlife is under threat and homegrown energy can reduce pollution.

Crete Lowered Its Property Tax Levy To Help Struggling Residents. Then State Aid Disappeared.

n the past several years, Crete’s state aid has been between $740,000 and $865,000. For the coming fiscal year, Crete’s estimated aid amount is just over $140,000.

CRETE — It was Fourth of July weekend, and the small city 30 minutes southwest of Lincoln didn’t have enough police officers to go around.

There was one officer on duty when the call came in. When the officer arrived, an irate man, naked and armed with an ax, greeted them from his car.

Meanwhile, routine complaints — about fireworks, noise, general holiday disruptions — continued. Frustration built as callers learned no officers were immediately available.

OMAHA — A proposed 25,000-square-foot grocery store in the heart of North Omaha — described as a social enterprise to be run by a nonprofit — has now received the green light from the Omaha City Council and was the subject of a community meeting Wednesday.

The 6 p.m. gathering at the Venue at Highlander, 2120 N. 30th St., reviewed community input received so far and discussed next steps as the project moves toward a planned groundbreaking this fall, said representatives of the Heart Ministry Center, which has been leading the effort.

DETROIT (AP) — A major new bridge linking Canada and the U.S. at Detroit opened Monday to trucks, cars and other vehicles, the climax of a yearslong project that lately had been bruised a bit by international politics.

Descendants of Gordie Howe, the hockey legend whose name is on the bridge, were among the first to cross over the Detroit River, which separates the Motor City from Windsor, Ontario. U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., rode a motorcycle, while Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer drove a Ford Mustang with the top down.

Affordable Housing Often Costs More To Build Than Market‑Rate Housing – Colorado Is Closing The Gap

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 07/30/2026 - 12:00am

In much of the United States, developers spend more to build an affordable apartment for a low-income family than a market-rate one just down the street – sometimes far more. It is one of the central paradoxes of the nation’s housing crisis: The affordable homes that lower-income renters need most tend to be the costliest to build.

Neighbors, Environmental Groups Oppose Hog Confinement Planned Near Scenic Niobrara River

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 07/23/2026 - 12:00am

Concerns are growing about a 5,000-head hog confinement barn being planned near Valentine, 2.7 miles from the scenic Niobrara River, one of Nebraska’s  top tourist destinations.

Critics say the area’s sandy soils and shallow groundwater make it highly susceptible to contamination from hog manure leaching into groundwater or washing into the river, threatening float trips for the 60,000 paddlers who visit the Niobrara each year.
