After $17 Million Revamp, Two Omaha Historic Sites Are Set To Open As Affordable Housing

OMAHA — In a $17 million renovation project years in the making, two historic structures, one built over 130 years ago, are ready to provide affordable housing in one of Omaha’s oldest and evolving neighborhoods.

Between the Georgia Row Apartments and adjacent Hanscom Apartments, 75 homes, including family-size dwellings, will be available to renters whose income falls within federal eligibility limits.

No Children's Remains Found In Nebraska Dig Near Former Native American Boarding School

An archeological dig for a lost children's cemetery near the Nebraska site of a former Native American boarding school has ended after two weeks — and no remains were found.

Dave Williams, the state's archeologist, said the team searching near the former Genoa Indian Industrial School plans to meet on Zoom with representatives of 40 tribes across the U.S. next week to determine next steps.

Despite Dismissal Of Appeal, Advocates See Opportunity For Justice For Those Facing Eviction

LINCOLN — Attorneys for renters facing eviction are expressing optimism that help will be coming for their clients, despite the dismissal Friday of an appeal before the Nebraska Supreme Court.

In the appeal, attorneys with Legal Aid of Nebraska and the Nebraska Appleseed Center argued that those facing eviction have a constitutional right to a jury trial before they lose their home.

AARP Pitches In To Help Omaha’s Affordable Housing Plight

OMAHA — A national organization aimed at making life easier for the 50-and-older crowd has jumped in to do its part for Omaha’s affordable housing crunch.

AARP’s Nebraska chapter recognizes that different residential options and designs can lighten the load for all ages, including those in or nearing retirement, said state director Todd Stubbendieck.

Housing Costs Are 70% Of Increase In Inflation

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) was up 0.2% in June, 2023.  The all items index was up 3% for the 12 months ending in June.  Once again, the BLS says the index for shelter (housing costs) was the largest contributor (70%) to the monthly all items increase.

LONDON (AP) — Russia has suspended a wartime deal designed to move grain from Ukraine to parts of the world where millions are going hungry.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, brokered by the U.N. and Turkey, has allowed 32.9 million metric tons (36.2 million tons) of food to be exported from Ukraine since August, more than half to developing countries, according to the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul.
