After 118 Years, Catholic Voice Prints Last Issue
A newspaper operated by the Archdiocese of Omaha has seized print publication and will shift its operations to a digital distribution model.
The Omaha Catholic Voice said in a story labeled “End of an Era” last Friday that it printed its last issue after a 118 year run, including its predecessor, the True Voice.
“Along with the deaths and elections of popes, the Second Vatican Council, and many other stories of national, international and societal importance to Catholics and the Church, we’ve covered countless stories of local impact,” editor Mike May wrote. “These include the construction and dedication of the archdiocese’s mother church, St. Cecilia Cathedral, papal visits to nearby states, local responses to world wars, famines and other crises, news from our parishes and schools, the ordination of priests and deacons, installation of our bishops and archbishops, Catholic events around the archdiocese, along with thousands of other topics.”
In last Friday’s Catholic Voice, Deacon Tim McNeil, archdiocesan chancellor and director of the communications office, cited increased printing and mailing costs, along with declining advertising revenue and the popularity of online news sources as among the reasons for the decision. The news outlet will seek to provide a “regular flow of new stories” instead of asking readers to wait for a monthly newspaper.
