MoveBuddah Rates Nebraska 6th For Worst Rental State
A study by the company moveBuddha – an organization studying trends in moving and assisting individuals in making changing homes easier- names Nebraska as 6th in the country on their list of the worst states for rental stability. The company used tenant reviews from Rate The Landlord to scale local populations.
Ranking all 50 states, this study found that Nebraska saw 79% more complaints regarding renting than the national average, with complaints focused mostly on being evicted illegally, having rent raised despite issues with the property, and lease terms being ignored by landlords. Nebraska ranked just slightly better than Oregon.
A search on Rate The Landlord for the state of Nebraska finds multiple complaints like these, such as:
“Terrible landlord with a written track record of seizing deposits and charging tenants over 2x the deposit amount for ‘damages’.”
“Rate hikes every year with little or no repair or enhancement to the property. [The] landlord violated [the] lease agreement by drawing rent from the bank 5 days early and then threatened to charge a fee.”
“We received a very sizable rent increase a year ago without accompanying repairs to the unit. I have heard from other tenants though who have been aggressively harassed for being late on rent by just a few days.”
The worst state in the country for renting was found to be Washington, with 288% more complaints than the national average. MoveBuddha found that states without rent stabilization laws often had more complaints than those with protections in place, as many landlords would often raise rents with no notice.
The state that was found to be the best to rent in was Wyoming.
