The National Strategic Research Institute at the University of Nebraska opened a new 6,800-square-foot headquarters near the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Pacific Street campus.

The headquarters, located in the Scott Technology Center at 6825 Pine St., houses leadership offices, business and finance staff and the U.S. Strategic Command mission systems directorate.

Researchers at the university institute work with Department of Defense employees on natural security – specifically, combatting weapons of mass destruction, according to a news release.

“This space demonstrates the tremendous growth in capacity and credibility NSRI and the University of Nebraska have gained throughout the federal government for research in this mission-area,” said retired Lt. Gen. Robert Hinson, NSRI executive director.

Hinson said the institute is no longer a start-up organization but is “in double-down mode.”

“We have made significant impact developing and coordinating research and solutions that are in the hands of our U.S. war fighters, and we are on track to bring tremendous work forward,” Hinson said.

Since receiving a university affiliated research center designation in 2012, the National Strategic Research Institute has been awarded more than $160 million in work through 108 contracts and grants. Its revenue in 2019 was $18.4 million, which was up 52%.

The institute employs over 70 researchers and support staff, and it operates an office at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue; Annapolis Junction; Maryland, Fredericksburg, Virginia; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The new Omaha headquarters sets aside 3,000 square feet to student workstations in the Great Scott Lab, where students work on various Stratcom projects.

“The challenges of the 21st century will take all of us to solve,” Hinson said. “NSRI has the space, the opportunities and the desire to work with the best.”
