Omaha 7th In The Midwest For Women In STEM
Commercial Cafe has released a report ranking 123 cities in the United States regarding their STEM employment and the representation of women in STEM jobs. STEM; referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; is an area that women are often underrepresented, and many cities and organizations are pushing for more women to join. In 2017, the organization Women in STEM launched as an effort to get young women and high school kids to get interested in pursuing a career in STEM.
Commercial Cafe proceeded to rank the ten best cities in the country for women wishing to work in a STEM job, as well as by region. Rankings were earned across three categories: local STEM sector size, how many women were represented in that sector, and median earnings by those in working there.
Omaha ranked 7th against other Midwestern cities, with over 18,000 STEM jobs, 33% held by women. Between 2017 and 2021, nearly 2,000 women joined the STEM sector in Omaha, a rate that was on the higher end for the Midwest. Nationally, Omaha ranked 66th out of 123, just behind Anaheim, CA, and vastly ahead of Lincoln at 111th.
The Midwest shows the 3rd largest growth in the country behind the Southern and Western United States.
