UNMC, UNO Launch COVID-19 Screening iPhone App

The University of Nebraska has launched a COVID-19 screening mobile app for Apple devices.
The 1-Check COVID app, now available through the Apple App Store, is designed to screen large groups of people who are concerned they may have COVID-19 and to assist first responders and health care providers determine a person’s overall likelihood of carrying the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
“This is a screening app available free to anybody on the app store that allows you to go through the typical signs and symptoms,” said Dr. Jeffry Gold, chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Users answer questions on their symptoms, travel and comorbidities to determine tailored recommendations based on a determination as “low-risk,” “urgent risk” or “emergent risk” person.
“If you wish to share that with your health care providers, with your families or if you are employed and you need to report it to somebody, all you need to do is click one button and send it off,” Gold said. “This is a really powerful screening tool that has been extensively tested.”
The app was built with input from UNMC with assistance from students in UNO’s Walter Scott, Jr. Scholarship Program.
The app used Apple’s CareKit and ResearchKit frameworks. Harnoor Singh, director of student development for the Scott Scholars Program, and a small group of Scott Scholars worked on the project. Gold said that the development team is already working on the next version of the app.
Broad distribution of the app will help guide the nation’s response and manage information for wide-scale lab testing, said Dr. James Lawler of the Global Center for Health Security at UNMC.
“It’s a tool to alleviate concerns, provide reasonable guidance and provide important information based on regional data.,” Lawler said in a statement.
Gold said he hopes the app will be lifesaving for some users. Dr. Ron Markin, associate vice chancellor for business development and director of UNeTech, who helped mature the project, said each person’s situation is unique.
“This tool will enable individuals to screen themselves based on their symptoms and decide if they’re experiencing situational anxiety or need to call their doctor’s office or something in-between,” Markin said.
