Preparations Underway For Upcoming Primary Election

The upcoming primary election is drawing a high amount of interest, and demanding a lot of last-minute preparations, in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Local officials are offering several reminders to voters and are encouraging participation by mail instead of in-person voting.

Over 300,000 Nebraskans Request Primary Ballots

Nebraska’s primary election next month could see strong turnout if most people who requested ballots by mail return them in time.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen told the Omaha World-Herald that 340,000 Nebraskans had requested mail-in ballots as of last Friday. Another 50,000 voters who live in rural counties where voting by mail is the only option will also receive mail-in ballots.

Nebraska Property Tax Activists Suspend Ballot Campaign Due to Virus

Lincoln – Activists who were pushing for a statewide ballot measure to lower property taxes in Nebraska have suspended their campaign due to the coronavirus, organizers announced.

The group TRUE Nebraskans posted the announcement on its website. Organizers said the state’s social-distancing restrictions have made it too difficult to collect enough signatures by the July 2 deadline.

Nebraska Democratic Party Makes Primary Demands

The Nebraska Democratic Party is calling for an all-mail primary, as state officials continue to plan to open polling places on May 12.

“This is a public health crisis. Lives are at stake,” NDP Chair Jane Kleeb said in a statement.

Nebraska Forging Ahead With Primary Despite Pandemic

Nebraska won’t join several states that have delayed May primaries until June, but voters are encouraged to use the state’s “no excuse” early voting option to avoid the polls.

Gov. Pete Ricketts said the May 12 primary will proceed as scheduled. The governor said the state has a duty to carry out elections, and previous generations have held elections during times of pandemic and war.

Disruption Not Likely to Stop Marijuana, Casino Petitions

Lincoln – Nebraska voters may still get a chance to legalize medical marijuana and casino gambling even though the coronavirus has forced activists to stop collecting signatures to place the issues on the November ballot.

New Petition Drive Seeks Nonpartisan Redistricting Board

Lincoln – A coalition of organizations has proposed a ballot measure that would create an independent citizens commission to oversee redistricting of Nebraska’s congressional and state legislative districts.
