Former State Senator Remembered For Dogged Advocacy Of Rural Nebraska

LINCOLN — Former Nebraska State Sen. Loran Schmit is remembered as a dogged advocate for rural Nebraska and the father of the state’s ethanol industry, as well as a legislative leader who was ahead of his time on other issues, including gambling.

Schmit, 96, died Wednesday at his home in Bellwood.

Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield is leaving the ice cream brand after 47 years, saying that the independence it once had to speak up on social issues has been stifled by parent company Unilever.

Nvidia To Invest $5 Billion In Struggling Rival Intel

Nvidia, the world's leading chipmaker, announced on Thursday that it's investing $5 billion in Intel and will collaborate with the struggling semiconductor company.

Nvidia said it will spend $5 billion to buy Intel common stock at $23.28 a share. The investment, which is subject to regulatory approvals, comes a month after the U.S. government took a 10% stake in Intel.

We live in an era of ever-sprawling franchise and chain eateries. They continue to grow and expand. Regional favorites have become national contenders. But as they continue to crowd out the local byways and fill in the empty stalls in strip malls, they start to look less and less unique. Growing up, if you wanted a sandwich in Bellevue, you had Subway or Blimpie. Now, you can close your eyes on a certain stretch of Cornhusker Road and point and you’d have selected one of a dozen franchisees.

Rural letter carrier Roger McDonald missed driving his 150-mile route outside Scottsbluff in northwestern Nebraska earlier this year. He was injured in a serious car accident that kept him from mail delivery for three months. He had an appointment scheduled with the doctor who rebuilt his right hand on May 8, so he decided to do a dry run the day before in case he was cleared to return.
