Disappearing Dentists: For Low-Income Nebraskans, Long Drives, Long Lines, Little Help

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 08/15/2023 - 5:00am
Dr. Jessica Meeske of Hastings works on a patient in early August. Meeske, a pediatric dentist, said her clinic turns away 15 families a day because they are “overloaded and booked out.” She and other dentists say that Nebraska’s low Medicaid reimbursement rates make it nearly impossible to accept patients of low income. The number of dental practices accepting Nebraska Medicaid patients has nosedived in the past five years.

Arline Morris’ teeth are failing fast. She can’t eat much, and struggles daily with constant pain while taking medication that makes her teeth even more fragile.

She’s been offered appointments at Omaha and Lincoln dental clinics that will accept her Medicaid insurance. But Arline lives in Stratton, in southwest Nebraska – more than 200 miles from the nearest dentist who will take her.

Central Wisconsin’s Clark County is home to more dairy farms than any other county in the state, which bills itself as America’s Dairyland. Its identity is so tied to the dairy industry that a 16-foot-tall, black-and-white talking Holstein stands outside downtown Neillsville, the county seat.

EPA Approved A Fuel Ingredient Even Though It Could Cause Cancer In Virtually Every Person Exposed Over A Lifetime

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 08/08/2023 - 5:00am
An EPA document shows that a new Chevron fuel ingredient has a lifetime cancer risk more than 1 million times higher than what the agency usually finds acceptable — even greater than another Chevron fuel’s sky-high risk disclosed earlier this year. (Shutterstock)

The Environmental Protection Agency approved a component of boat fuel made from discarded plastic that the agency’s own risk formula determined was so hazardous, everyone exposed to the substance continually over a lifetime would be expected to develop cancer. Current and former EPA scientists said that threat level is unheard of.

A ‘She-Cession’ No More: After COVID Dip, Women’s Employment Hits All-Time High

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 08/01/2023 - 5:00am

After fears of a “she-cession” during the pandemic, women have returned to the workforce at unprecedented rates.

Much of the gain reflects a boom in jobs traditionally held by women, including nursing and teaching. Many good-paying jobs in fields such as construction and tech management are still dominated by men, a continuing challenge for states trying to even the playing field for women workers.
