Some might say I’m paranoid. To that I say, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.
Yes, I am worried, concerned, and, some might even say, paranoid about what might happen in Nebraska if we elect Scott Petersen as Secretary of State this November.
Scott Petersen is an election denier who would oversee our elections. Scott Petersen was just endorsed by Seth Keshel, a man who travels the country casting doubt and fear in the safety and security of our elections.

What do you remember about 9/11/2001? Do you remember anything at all?
I’m sure you’ve seen the yard signs popping up all over town. They say The Heartland Honors 9/11. It’s to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
I was at the press conference where Mayor Ewing, Police Chief Schmaderer, Fire Chief Kathy Bossman, and others announced the plans to commemorate those events.

I followed Officer Brown as he walked quickly through the concourse. Jadey scurried behind us. She tugged at my sleeve.
“Jadey,” I said sternly, “I told you if you were going to follow…”
“I know. I know,” she protested. “I just thought – these guys don’t know who you are or what you look like. Maybe it’d be better if you weren’t right on the cop’s hip.”

Just when you think politics in Nebraska can’t get any stranger, the Secretary of State says, “Hold my beer.”
Last Friday, Bob Evnen, the Secretary of State, announced that Brett Lindstrom didn’t have enough valid signatures to qualify to get on the ballot as an independent candidate for governor. Three petitioners who have already been charged with a felony for falsifying signatures on a separate issue allegedly falsified signatures for Brett, causing him to not meet the necessary threshold.

Governor Pillen, Secretary of State Evnen, and others who call for legislative change in how signatures are collected to get issues on the ballot have a valid point. The way we currently pay petitioners per signature doesn’t seem to be working.
Governor Pillen wants to stop paying people to get the names. But we can’t throw the baby out with the bath water. In our Unicameral system of government, with a weak Democratic Party, the petition process is the only way to get some important measures before the people.

“Dad! You’re freaking me out!” Jadey cried as the speedometer just touched 90 miles per hour.
“Yep,” I growled through gritted teeth as I took my foot off the gas and eased it onto the brake pedal. I pushed harder until we started to quickly decelerate right up to the front of the convention center. Despite executing my stop in a completely safe manner, a handful of passersby scurried as if I were going to hit them. Jadey gasped in response.
“Dude, chill,” I shot back. “They’re like thirty feet away.”

A year and a half ago, I testified before a Unicameral Committee when they held a public hearing on making Nebraska a winner-take-all state. Donald Trump, Jim Pillen, and the Republican Party in general want to make Nebraska like 48 other states and stop dividing our Electoral College votes by district.

If you’re not paying attention to the case out of Lancaster County where 2/3 of the signatures submitted by a group called Good Government Lincoln were flagged as fraudulent, you should be. While this petition was focused on Lincoln issues, there could be broader political consequences statewide.

It’s never seemed more obvious that a whole lot of folks are in need of some good old-fashioned love and support. There are institutions, both governmental and not, that provide financial benefits, but I’m talking about the kind of place where you can actually go and belong. Some of these escapes take the form of a hidden gem of a brew pub while others are purpose-built to get folks back on their feet. A few days back, I was lucky enough to lean into both.

The older man was at least being complicit. He let the kid go and took a seat on the curb – not because we told him to, but because he was clearly overheated and needed the break. “He was cutting tires!” the old man puffed. “I saw him cutting tires!” “I’m sorry,” said the officer nearest him. “You caught him slashing your tires?” “No – not mine,” the old man snapped. “I was sitting in traffic and saw him with a blade over in that parking lot there. And I saw him cutting the tires. I got out of my car and went and grabbed him.
