When communities are hit by hurricanes, floods and wildfires they can often count on receiving federal disaster relief to help respond to the unfolding crisis and recover from its effects.

A few weeks back I came across some alarming data from a group called More in Common, a nonprofit whose core mission is identifying and overcoming “the underlying drivers of fracturing and polarization” in our communities. In a 2019 study they call the “Perception Gap,” More in Common explored Americans’ distorted understanding of those on the other side of the political aisle.

The recent banking crisis, marked by the collapse of several major financial institutions, has been a wake-up call for investors worldwide. This crisis has unveiled a hard truth: the traditional banking system, often perceived as a bedrock of financial stability, can be incredibly fragile. Banks, even those with longstanding reputations and seemingly robust structures, have been unable to withstand the economic pressures, leading to sudden collapses.

Providing oversight of the federal government is a critical part of my job as a United States Senator. From pushing back on illegal new mandates to fighting wasteful spending, there is a lot of important work to do. And while the Biden administration is failing on many policy matters, it’s also failing its responsibility to provide basic constituent services like passports in a reasonable time – and Americans are paying the price.
