Missing ‘Thank You’ Is Making Me Not Want to Send Gifts

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 07/12/2023 - 12:00am

Dear Annie: I have a family of grandnieces and nephews who never say thank you or let you know they received their gift. They are young, and I’d blame my niece for not teaching them, but she has five children, and I can imagine it’s hard for her to find the time to teach them to say thank you.

The Challenges To Business Success In America

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 07/11/2023 - 12:00am

I have been writing this column for over 21 years and have seen a lot of changes. But nothing as dramatic as what I’m seeing now.

On Former President Donald Trump And The GOP Debates

Published by jason@omahadail... on Mon, 07/10/2023 - 3:00am

Candidate debates have become a fixture of presidential campaigns, and they’re especially valuable in primaries. Voters get a chance to see how well candidates perform under pressure, and relative unknowns get rare exposure against the front-runners. The debates helped Barack Obama in 2008 against Hillary Clinton, and they helped Donald Trump in 2016, so it’s notable that this time Mr. Trump is threatening not to debate.

Dog-Walking Etiquette

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 07/06/2023 - 8:06am

Dear Annie: I live in a nice neighborhood in a modest-sized city. This is a dog-rich environment, with most of my neighbors owning and frequently walking their dogs. I have two, which flourish in my yard, and we rarely walk.

Dignifying Work, Asking Questions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 07/05/2023 - 2:00am

Solving the manufactured debt-ceiling shakedown, er, crisis, included the House expanding work requirements for those receiving SNAP benefits, the program formerly known as food stamps.

Get Headed Down A Debt-End Course

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 07/04/2023 - 3:00am

Facing your debts can be depressing for several reasons. First, all the stuff that caused the debt is not so wonderful and new as it used to be. And the interest rates ... Yikes! But the worst, the all-time most horrible thing about facing debt is the realization that given the present rate of repayment, that monster is going to hang around and invade your life like a huge family of freeloading relatives, for a very long time. That’s the bad news.

Defending Our Country

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 07/03/2023 - 2:00am

Last week, the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) advanced its annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This bill, which we must pass every year, sets our policies and spending priorities for the military. Most importantly, this year’s NDAA supports an increase in pay levels for our service men and women by over five percent.

On The Supreme Court And Elections

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 06/30/2023 - 2:00am

So much for the radical Supreme Court. A 6-3 majority on Tuesday rejected the argument advanced by some conservatives that the U.S. Constitution bars state courts from reviewing Congressional maps and voting laws. The result isn’t the runaway victory that progressives claim, but it will lead to more election-law controversies.

Getting It Into Evidence

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 06/29/2023 - 1:00am

Most of you know that I’m a practicing attorney in Ohio with a history of trial work and litigation. One of the things a trial lawyer thinks about is how to get information admitted into evidence. I want to share with you the best way to get text messages between you and another party admitted into evidence. There is a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Tackling The Opioid Crisis Demands Multiple Approaches

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 06/28/2023 - 3:00am

News of the opioid crisis has inundated the headlines in recent years. Despite the attention this problem has received, America experienced a record number of overdose deaths last year.  While we are nowhere near the end of this public health tragedy, I believe the first rays of sunshine are peeking over the horizon.
