Beat The Heat With Hydrating Foods This Summer

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 06/27/2023 - 12:00am

Staying hydrated can help you live a longer, healthier life. But drinking multiple glasses of water throughout the day isn’t for everyone.

Health experts say that’s OK. While fluids are important, hydration doesn’t just come in a bottle or from the tap. In fact, at least 19% of a U.S. adult’s water intake typically comes from water-rich foods. And they’re not hard to find.

On Use Of Excessive Force By Police Officers In The U.S.

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 06/26/2023 - 2:00am

George Floyd was far from the first or only one. Men shot during foot chases or no-knock raids; a 14-year-old boy held by the throat, beaten with a flashlight and pinned by a knee at his neck and back; protesters pushed to the ground; a journalist who lost her eye to a rubber bullet. These are only a few of the incidents the Justice Department underscores in a report after its multiyear investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department.

Farm Bill Progress

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 06/23/2023 - 1:00am

This Monday, I had another opportunity to hear directly from Nebraska producers about this year’s Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is a pivotal package of legislation covering everything from federal agricultural policies to food assistance programs. It’s only passed once every five years.

Understanding Bad Debt Loss Deductions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 06/22/2023 - 3:00am

The current economic climate makes this a good time to focus on bad debt losses.  As an individual taxpayer, deducting bad debt losses has always been controversial with the IRS.

To claim the deduction, you must first establish that the loss was from a bona fide loan transaction that went wrong. So be alert.

It’s Important To Rethink The Purpose Of University Education – A Philosopher Of Education Explains Why

Published by jason@omahadail... on Wed, 06/21/2023 - 4:00am

Most philosophers of education or philosophically inclined scholars of education in the past century and a half would agree with the claim that, ideally, education should be the practice of freedom. That is, it ought to cultivate the ability to intelligently decide how we want to shape our lives. The aim of education should be to foster human autonomy.

A Legal Checklist For A Retail Website

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 06/20/2023 - 2:00am

“I’m planning to set up a fashion accessories website.

I think I will be selling mostly on Amazon, eBay and other online platforms, but after watching your YouTube video ‘Doing Business on the Internet’ (go to www.youtube.com and search for “Cliff Ennico Internet”), I realize it’s going to be tough to build a distinctive brand without my own website.

Avoiding ‘Unsocial Media’

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 06/19/2023 - 2:00am

Dear Annie: The reports of teens being bullied and committing suicide are distressing. Bullying is not a new problem, but it’s a different world these days because of social media, which I call “unsocial” media.

Humanities Degrees In Free Fall

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 06/16/2023 - 1:00am

Full disclosure: I was an English major.

The reaction I sometimes get to this revelation usually runs along the lines of poverty vows or money wasting, but the backstory to my academic path has some utility. In those days a journalism major at UNL was automatically also an English major.

Transgress To Impress: Why Do People Tag Buildings – And Are There Any Solutions?

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 06/15/2023 - 1:00am

In 1985 photographer Rennie Ellis defined graffiti as “the result of someone’s urge to say something – to comment, inform, entertain, persuade, offend or simply to confirm his or her own existence here on earth”. Since the mid-1980s, graffiti has crossed from vandalism to an accepted form of art practice through large murals or “pieces” and stencil art aimed at informing, entertaining and persuading us.

6 Books That Explain The History And Meaning Of Juneteenth

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 06/14/2023 - 4:00am

After decades of being celebrated at mostly the local level, Juneteenth – the long-standing holiday that commemorates the arrival of news of emancipation and freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 – became a federal holiday in 2021. In honor of this year’s Juneteenth, The Conversation reached out to Wake Forest University humanities professor Corey D. B. Walker for a list of readings that can help people better understand the history and meaning of the observance.
