Talking Across The Political Aisle Isn’t A Cure-All – But It Does Help Reduce Hostility

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 01/09/2023 - 2:00am

Simmering tension in American politics came to a head two years ago, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election. The failed insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, resulted in several deaths and injuries to almost 150 police officers.

Beyond Section 230: A Pair Of Social Media Experts Describes How To Bring Transparency And Accountability To The Industry

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 01/06/2023 - 3:00am

One of Elon Musk’s stated reasons for purchasing Twitter was to use the social media platform to defend the right to free speech. The ability to defend that right, or to abuse it, lies in a specific piece of legislation passed in 1996, at the pre-dawn of the modern age of social media.

The Rockingwell Sheriff Sale Judgment

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 01/05/2023 - 2:00am

I noticed an upcoming auction on Rockingwell Boulevard, which is a neighborhood I am pretty familiar with. A credit card company, whom had been awarded a judgment for an unpaid balance, had initiated foreclosure on a property in an attempt to recover their money owed. This particular property consisted of two parcels, one with a house and one with empty land.  As the owner’s name was on both, the credit card judgment stuck to both parcels. At first glance there was a large bank mortgage that ate up all the equity.

3 Reasons Local Climate Activism Is More Powerful Than People Realize

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 01/04/2023 - 2:00am

Global warming has increased the number of extreme weather events around the world by 400% since the 1980s. Countries know how to stop the damage from worsening: stop burning fossil fuels and shift to renewable energy, electrify transportation and industry, and reduce the carbon intensity of agriculture.

But none of this is happening fast enough to avoid warming on a catastrophic scale.

Your New Year’s Resolutions For 2023

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 01/03/2023 - 3:00am

New Year’s resolutions are all about habits. Breaking some bad ones (smoking, drinking excessively, binging on fast food) and starting new ones (working out, eating more Brussels sprouts).

Businesses, like individuals, develop bad habits over time that need correction, while success in business over the long run usually means adopting good management habits and sticking with them year after year.

For The Good Of The State, Nebraska Senators Need A Pay Raise, A Healthy Pay Raise.

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 01/02/2023 - 2:00am

Since 1988, the state’s 49 senators have been paid $12,000 a year, an amount so low that it produces a Legislature that is far from representative of the state that is serves.

Demographically, the average age of a Nebraska lawmaker is 57. The average age of all Nebraskans is 36.

The Blame Game Is A No-Win For Landlords

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 1:00am

If you have spent more than 30 seconds in the last year watching cable news, you are more than familiar with something called “the blame game.”  Regardless of political party affiliation, age, race, gender, sexual preference or any of a host of other categories, it appears that our society has become a place of great divide.  As a landlord you are not immune to this growing epidemic of blame and in fact, you’re likely to take more than your fair share of blame when it comes to tenants and their problems.  After all, t

Immigration Key To State’s Future Prosperity

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 12/28/2022 - 1:00am

There are close to 80,000 unfilled jobs in Nebraska.

The birth rate in the state is continuing to decline as are the number of students in elementary and high schools and enrolled in the state’s colleges and universities, demographic changes that will ensure a continuing employment crisis well into the future.
