Risers, Founders, Planners And Fillers: 4 Career Paths To Get To The Top At Nonprofits

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 12/14/2022 - 2:00am

A nonprofit’s executive director has an important job to do. Typically, no one else contributes more to the organization’s success.

Evidence indicates that turnover among these top staffers is high and that nonprofit boards often have trouble finding good candidates. Yet there’s been little research about how people become executive directors or how well-prepared they are for the job.

Year-End Tax Planning For 2022

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 12/13/2022 - 12:00am

As we reach the end of the first “post-COVID year,” it’s hard to even think of another income tax deadline in three to four months.

But as Mark Twain once observed, the only two things you can count on in life are death and taxes.

A Promise Of Investigations, Not Inflation Solutions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 12/12/2022 - 1:00am

We’re awash in political surprises. Who knew the formulas for solving inflation were on Hunter Biden’s laptop? Or that crime would plummet overnight once power in the House of Representatives changed hands? That caravans lurching toward the border would inexplicably lose their value as news? That those prices at the pump would miraculously move in the right direction?

Religious Freedom And LGBTQ Rights Are Clashing In Schools And On Campuses – And Courts Are Deciding

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 12/09/2022 - 2:00am

Disputes over religious freedom and LGBTQ rights in the United States have led to some of the most high-profile judicial controversies – and 2022 is no exception. For example, the Supreme Court began hearing arguments Dec. 5, 2022, about whether a designer can refuse to create wedding websites for same-sex couples; a ruling is likely in late June 2023.

Rentals And Smoke Detectors

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 12/08/2022 - 3:00am

Over many years, I have observed that some residents in my rental properties will disable or remove smoke detectors. I install them in all the required places and make sure that any battery-operated units have new batteries, and the residents have instructions. I go one step further. I show them each unit, demonstrate that it works, and have the resident sign that they are all in place and working on the move-in date. I emphasize the importance of these devices for safety.

Vaping’s Lure Strong, But Parents Stronger

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 12/07/2022 - 2:00am

Parents, do you feel as if the distance is growing between you and your teenage son or daughter? If the answer is “yes,” that widening gap could be more than a sign that your child is growing away from you.

Preparing Your Cap Tables The Right Way

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 12/06/2022 - 1:00am

“We have kind of a ‘good news, bad news’ problem in our business.

On the one hand, a local angel investor has offered to buy 15% of our company for $300,000.

A Month In, Casino Shows Revenue Potential

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 2:00am

In 2020, proponents of the initiative that would allow casinos at the state’s horseracing tracks made a convincing argument that providing gambling there would keep the cash wagered and the tax dollars it generates in Nebraska rather than seeing it cross the Missouri River to Iowa casinos.

After just a month of operation of one casino, that prediction is bearing out – in millions.

Nebraska Needs To Heal, Not Punish, Physicians With Addictions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 12/02/2022 - 2:00am

The stigma of addiction is alive and destructive in the state of Nebraska.  I am an addict in recovery, and I am a physician. In Nebraska, that is a bad combination because there is a system in place that can destroy careers. The Nebraska Board of Medicine and our legal system aggressively work to punish addicts, not heal.  My intent is to use my story to explain how Nebraska is more punitive than other states and to promote change in the medical and legal systems.

Connecting Nebraska’s Waiting Children With Forever Families

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 12/01/2022 - 2:00am

The family unit plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s life.  A loving home is a tremendous blessing –it’s easy for many of us to take that for granted.  But there are nearly 500 children in Nebraska still waiting on a forever family.  At the State, we are working diligently to find every one of these children a safe, loving home.  I encourage you to consider what you can do to play a part in changing a child’s life through adoption or foster care.
