NE’s Top Labor Official, John Albin, To Retire Following A 35-Year Run With The Labor Department

LINCOLN — John Albin remembers back in 1990, when Nebraskans still filled out paper unemployment claims, and his new colleagues at the State Department of Labor entered the data into a mainframe computer.

Today those services are all online. The department that Albin rose within has modernized in myriad other ways and, more recently, pushed through a pandemic that stressed labor departments nationwide.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he intends to nominate U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz as the next attorney general of the United States, an unexpected pick as the Florida Republican remains the subject of a congressional ethics investigation for alleged sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and accepting improper gifts.

WASHINGTON — Republicans on Wednesday elected their leadership teams for the next Congress, opting for a new slate in the Senate while reelecting many of the same lawmakers in the House.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune will become that chamber’s next majority leader, marking the first time since 2007 that Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell hasn’t held the top GOP slot after choosing to retire from leadership.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The first time China faced Donald Trump in the White House, there was a trade war, a breach of protocol involving Taiwan’s former leader, and a president-to-president bromance that turned sour.

As President-elect Trump prepares to start his second term in office, China is bracing for unpredictability in its ties with the United States and renewed tensions over trade, technology and Taiwan.

LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen has elevated one of the associate justices on the Nebraska Supreme Court to be the state’s next chief justice.

Pillen selected Justice Jeffrey Funke of Nebraska City to succeed Chief Justice Mike Heavican of Lincoln, who will retire at the end of October.
