OMAHA — Affordable housing and mental health care are the key topics in the last of three installments from interviews the Nebraska Examiner held with the Republican and Democratic candidates for governor.

The candidates — University of Nebraska Regent Jim Pillen, the Republican, and State Sen. Carol Blood, the Democrat — also discussed how their administrations would reflect the state.

Large Number Of Contested Races Spice 2022 Elections For Nebraska Legislature

LINCOLN — Nebraska is seeing a larger-than-normal number of hotly contested campaigns for the State Legislature this fall, with multiple candidates raising more than $100,000 in donations.

The races could have major consequences for issues like abortion and concealed carry of firearms that have been blocked in the past by filibusters by as few as 17 of the 49 senators in the Unicameral Legislature.

Biden Student Debt Forgiveness Plan On Temporary Hold After Appeals Court Ruling

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court on Friday temporarily blocked the Biden administration from carrying out its student loan forgiveness plan, until the court makes a determination on a request for an injunction brought by six Republican-led states, according to multiple media reports.

COLUMBUS, Nebraska — Nebraska voters didn’t get a chance to size up the major candidates to replace Gov. Pete Ricketts on the debate stage this year.

Republican nominee Jim Pillen declined to debate, describing the process as political theater. His Democratic opponent, State Sen. Carol Blood, criticized the move.

Lawmakers’ Road Trip Pushes Airport-Related Change To Nebraska Constitution

LINCOLN — A bipartisan trio of Nebraska lawmakers traversed Husker land this week touting an air travel-related ballot measure as a way the state can ramp up new business and talent.

Amendment 1, which Nebraskans will vote on Nov. 8, would open a gate for cities and counties with airports to spend public funds to expand commercial flight offerings.

Patrick O’Donnell, Nation’s Longest-Serving Clerk Of The Legislature, Plans To Retire

LINCOLN – Patrick O’Donnell, the longtime clerk of the Nebraska Legislature, announced Tuesday that he’s retiring at the end of the year.

O’Donnell, 73, is currently the longest-serving clerk of a state legislature in the nation, having held the post since 1978.

Gubernatorial candidate and Senator Carol Blood held the seventh of her town hall meetings with the public at the Firefighters Union Hall in Omaha last Tuesday as part of her boots-on-the-ground campaign in the lead up to the November election. Handing out campaign pamphlets, mock-up newspapers made by her team, and organizational charts outlining the Nebraska government, she had a personal and open chat with her constituents.
