Dear reader, writing this article was like going ten rounds with the boxing world heavyweight champion. Imagine this: There I was, thinking I had discovered the hardest thing to do when asked by a child to skip a rock across a loose pile of hay, when my editor Maggie interrupted me solemnly. “Austin, I know it's tough," she began while I froze up. Tension piled up inside me as she continued, “I need you to go try out the best wings in Omaha, at Tracks."

Historic Home Purchase To Help Preserve Omaha’s Heritage

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 01/30/2025 - 12:00am
In 1903, George and Sarah Joslyn completed one of Nebraska’s greatest homes – a 35-room Scottish Baronial mansion atop a hill on Omaha’s outskirts. Slated to be torn down, it is one of the many historic treasures, saved by local preservation efforts.

He bought the farm. To many it may simply mean he passed away. But in a spectacular turn of events, this lofty purchase, in a very roundabout way, ties together generations past.

(Austin Petak / The Daily Record)

When my Editor came to me and asked if I wanted to get paid to head to 36th and V Street to write about street tacos, I did my very best to hide my enthusiasm and remain as professional as possible.

As most stories that begin with a guy sitting alone at a bar, it’s usually about a woman; this time at least… it was about interviewing one. While waiting, I took out my little black book and started scribbling down descriptions of that which was around me.

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around, does it make a sound … Well, without our air, which is filled with molecules, the world would be silent. Sound is a vibration carried by acoustic waves, which travel through various elements in our atmosphere. But, if you don’t believe it, see or rather hear for yourself.
