Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy all started with one participant, one horse and three volunteers. In 1989, Steve and Janet Henthorn established its mission –to improve the quality of life, both physically and emotionally, of adults and children of all ability levels through equine-assisted activities.

Approximately 28 years ago, members of the Harvard Law School Class of 1958 created an organization to help establish, and provide guidance for, nonprofit centers across the country. They were designed to address and reform systemic societal issues.

Michael Earl is an Omaha native who – after an injury led to him giving up a baseball scholarship at the University of Northern Colorado – attended University of Nebraska at Omaha, pursuing a degree in business. In college Earl got an opportunity to buy Sir Knight, a men’s formalwear store he worked at. With the help of a partner, he purchased the store. After five years he sold his half of the business to his partner. He then opened Munchville, a popcorn eatery, with the help of some friends.

A study by Harvard Medical School last year found that nearly 22 million people have experienced period poverty, which is the lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and/or education on menstruation. A study by Kotex that same year found that two in five people who menstruate struggle to afford period products regularly, and that one-third of those in low-income areas have had to miss work or school due to a lack of supplies.
