Creighton law school students were busy all fall, preparing for its annual moot court competition. The final round happened on Friday, October 27, 2023. Moot court competitions are often an elected course for many law schools, but Creighton requires all second-year students to prepare written and oral arguments, to be presented to a panel of judges. It provides a real-life experience to argue an appellate case.

Chris Tonniges, President and CEO of Lutheran Family Services, and Wayne Brown, President and CEO of the Urban League of Nebraska, found that there wasn’t a space for nonprofit executives to meet and have the opportunity to collaborate. The National Association of Counties and Commissioner, Mary Ann Borgeson of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, spoke on her chapter in the newly released book Governing on the Ground: The Past, Present, and Future of County Government. Written and compiled by Peter Golden, the book is a collection of 30 different government officials and their areas of expertise.

For the past few years, Mayor Jean Stothert has spoken about her plans for a streetcar for Omaha. Starting last summer, the plans were officially finalized, and the Omaha Street Car Authority was established, with the intention to have the streetcar up and running by spring 2027 according to a recent newsletter from the Omaha Streetcar Authority.

The right to counsel seems like a no-brainer, but at one time — unless charged with a capital (death penalty) case — defendants were often expected to represent themselves. But, Gideon v. Wainwright changed all that. Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963)
