Juvenile Reform In Douglas County

Douglas county has spent the last few years updating and improving their juvenile detention and rehabilitation. Over the last 15 years there has been a steady decline in rates of incarcerated youth in Douglas County, falling to record lows in 2021. Kim Hawekotte, the Deputy County Administrator for Juvenile Services in Douglas County, spoke on the work that Douglas County has been doing to reform juvenile detention and make it into a preventative and rehabilitative service instead.

Does The Future Of Business And Thought Lie In The Hands Of AI?

The artist is dead. The accountant is out of a job. Lawyers are being replaced. Architects don’t need to sketch anymore. AI is here and slowly showing its ability to fill the shoes of any profession. As AI technology gets implemented in more avenues, we’re finding the places a machine can’t replace the human mind. The new technology has had a surge in the last year, but it is not new by any means.

A Century Of Tradition: Grandma’s Heirloom Fruitcake Recipe

The Beatrice Bakery has been a staple in Beatrice, NE for almost six decades. After the Lantz brothers immigrated from Germany in 1917 – with their grandmother’s fruitcake recipe in hand – they opened a bakery in St. Louis, MO to share their beloved grandmother’s fruitcake recipe.

Omaha Ranked 15th Best City For College Graduates

In a recent survey of the best cities for college graduates to start their careers in, Omaha ranked 15th in the large cities category. CoworkingCafe, an information hub for CRE news and reports, compared cities across the country based on employment, financial, and lifestyle opportunities in each city. The cities were split into three categories based on population: large cities with populations of over 400,000, small cities with populations less than 150,000, and medium cities sitting in-between.

Anti-LGBTQIA+ Laws Proposed, Enacted During The 2023 Nebraska Legislative Session

The Human Rights Campaign, one of the leading LGBTQIA+ civil rights campaigns that has been around since the 1980’s, has declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQIA+ Americans. With over half the states across the country proposing and passing laws that are specifically targeted towards the queer community, it is becoming increasingly dangerous for LGBT individuals.

Liberating System-Impacted LGBTQIA2S+ People, Those Living With HIV/AIDS Through Advocacy, Support

Black and Pink is a national LGBTQIA+ organization that works to liberate and work alongside system-impacted LGBTQIA+ individuals as well as those who have been impacted by HIV/AIDS. The organization started in 2005, they are based in Omaha, NE and are working with many chapters across the country to assist queer individuals. Black and Pink is also an abolitionist organization and works to end the current incarceration system in the United States.

Omaha 7th In The Midwest For Women In STEM

Commercial Cafe has released a report ranking 123 cities in the United States regarding their STEM employment and the representation of women in STEM jobs. STEM; referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; is an area that women are often underrepresented, and many cities and organizations are pushing for more women to join. In 2017, the organization Women in STEM launched as an effort to get young women and high school kids to get interested in pursuing a career in STEM.

The Colonization Of Hawai’i: A Story Of Greed, Betrayal

As we celebrate another Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it is important to remember the story of how Hawaii became part of the United States. While it is not a new story to tell during this time, as more and more native Hawaiians are flocking to the continental United States for affordable homes – with a large influx moving to Las Vegas, where housing is half the cost as it currently is on the islands – it is important to take the time to recall how the 50th State joined the union.

Guerrilla Gardening: How The Public Takes Beautification Into Their Own Hands

Guerrilla gardening is used to reclaim community spaces, rejuvenate urban areas, and encourage more connection with nature. It’s a phenomenon that gets more popular every year. There are many benefits to the movement such as encouraging biodiversity by planting native plants and creating community gardens.

Guerrilla Gardening is the term for planting in areas that the gardener doesn’t own. While the term was first coined in the 1970’s in New York, it took off again in the early 2000’s when Richard Reynolds started blogging his local adventures in London. Since then, people all over the world have bonded together to improve the areas around them.
