You probably didn’t realize it at the time, but if you voted for Donald Trump, you voted for explosive diarrhea.
Before I get accused of having TDS or Trump Derangement Syndrome, what I just wrote is a stone-cold fact.
Last year, due to DOGE cuts, the CDC stopped mandatory monitoring for cyclospora, the parasite found in unwashed food that causes that condition. So far, more than 30 states, including Nebraska and Iowa, have reported over 3,000 illnesses, with Michigan alone reporting more than 1,250 cases.

I wonder how politicians do it. How do they keep a straight face when they say some of the things they say?
Case in point: Senator Pete Ricketts.
Recently, at a gathering in Fort Calhoun, the Senator criticized his opponent Dan Osborn for allegedly recruiting Graham Platner to run for Senate in Maine. Platner, as you’ll recall, was, among other things, accused of raping a former girlfriend.

In my 30+ years of doing this kind of work, I have met many politicians of all political persuasions. And with very few exceptions, I have found them all to be decent people. That doesn’t mean that I agree with them all or would even consider voting for many of them. But regardless of party, they all seem to me to be good men and women who want to make democracy work.

Did you know there is a law on the books in Nebraska that states that a man must buy his wife a new hat every year? Or that whale fishing is outlawed in the state? Or that American citizens who have never lived in Nebraska or even the US for that matter, can vote in the good life state?

Close to 187,000 signatures were turned in for a petition organized by a group called Respect Nebraska Voters. This petition would amend the Nebraska Constitution to make it harder, if not downright impossible, for the Unicameral to tweak legislation after it’s been improved by the voters.
Now, on the surface, it might seem like a good idea, and I know the sponsors of the petition drive’s hearts are in the right place, but if the initiative gets on the ballot (which it most likely will), I hope the voters are smart enough to vote no.

Shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling that birthright citizenship will remain the law of the land, I started hearing a new phrase. Maybe it had been used before, and I wasn’t paying that close attention, but after the 6-3 ruling, conservative politicians, talking heads, and social media posts really started using the term “birth tourism.”

In my talk radio days from the mid 90’s till around 2014, before I went on the air, I would sometimes ask myself, “What am I going to be outraged about today?”
I knew that if I found an extreme story about a person or group doing something outlandish, I could make it into a bigger issue than it was and get the phone lines buzzing. It would make for good talk radio and get me through the show.
I never made up an opinion or lied about how I felt about the story, but I often blew it out of proportion for the benefit of the show.

Now let me get this straight.
President Trump won’t sign bipartisan legislation to make it easier for people to buy a house until Congress passes legislation that will make it harder for those same homebuyers to vote.
Make that make sense.
The SAVE Act that President Trump is trying to pass is such a bad idea that many Republican Senators who normally grovel at his feet and jump at his every demand are saying that this is a bridge too far.
Trump is trying to sell this as some commonsense voter ID legislation, but it is far from that.

There have been times in my life when I’ve been dead-ass broke. Too much month at the end of my money, as the old country and western song goes. Thankfully, I’ve never been in a situation where I had to apply for SNAP benefits or government assistance of any kind, but I came close.
As a single man, my economic condition only affected me. And whether it was because of the way I was raised or just an inherent attitude, I knew my monetary setback was only temporary and that the hard times weren’t going to last forever.

The calendar says that this July 4th, the United States of America will be celebrating its 250th birthday.
But are we really 250 years old or just fifteen months old?
I guess that depends on your definition of the United States. Is America our borders, or is America more about our ideals?
If you think of our country as just the fifty states, I guess we are 250 years old. Well, technically, only thirteen states are that age. But you get the point.
