Eisenhower Is Rolling In His Grave

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 04/14/2026 - 12:00am

I wonder what Dwight Eisenhower would think if he were alive today.

For that matter, I wonder if I got a hundred people in a room who were all under the age of 40 and I asked them if they even knew who Dwight David Eisenhower was, how many would know.

You’re probably wondering why I would wonder such a thing. After all, while historians appreciate all he accomplished, when the average American thinks of the great presidents, his name doesn’t normally rise to the top of the list.

But maybe we should give his legacy a second look.

The Political Bracket

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Fri, 04/10/2026 - 12:00am

Well, March Madness is finally over. And just like every other year, none of my teams made it to the Final Four.

Unless it’s Creighton or Nebraska, I don’t follow college basketball all that closely.

At bracket time, I’m not really informed. If I pick any team that’s a five seed or lower, I’ll make my choice based on a hunch or if I like the name.

And just like every other year, Gonzaga has let me down.

The Dream I Had Last Night

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 04/07/2026 - 12:00am

I’ve got to stop watching the news before I go to bed. It’s giving me weird dreams.

Before falling asleep the other night, I read the bizarre story of the former head of the Department of Homeland Security’s husband. It’s been revealed that Kristi Noem’s spouse, Bryon had posted pictures of himself with fake boobs and a pouting face.

As I started to doze off with that image in my head, I had a dream.

2nd Congressional Race

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Mon, 04/06/2026 - 12:00am

I wonder how much the Democrats trust the voters in places like Grand Island, Scottsbluff, or Hastings. How much do they trust them to elect a Democrat to the Unicameral or a Republican who has the courage to stand up to Governor Pillen and will work to protect the so-called blue dot?

For that matter, how much do they trust Nebraska voters to elect Lynne Walz for Governor?

Because John Cavanaugh’s quest to win the Democratic nomination for the Second Congressional District hinges on the trust of Democratic and Independent voters for those out state areas to do just that.

Senseless Immigration Laws

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Fri, 04/03/2026 - 12:00am

By Tom Becka

Make this make sense.

Carlos Godinez is a 47-year-old man who has lived in Nebraska since he was a young child. He is a graduate of Lexington High School and the University of Nebraska Kearney.

Carlos is a single father of two. He’s an entrepreneur who owns a Gyro restaurant in Kearney.

He is also sitting in a county jail charged with the heinous crime of being brought across the border when he was ten years old.

SAVING US From Imaginary Problems

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Mon, 03/30/2026 - 12:00am

President Trump and many Republicans are so concerned with undocumented people voting that they want to make it harder for the rest of us who are eligible to vote to be able to cast a ballot.

If passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, more commonly called the SAVE Act, were to be passed, you would have to prove you are an American citizen before you could register to vote.

You Win Some, You Lose Some

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Fri, 03/27/2026 - 12:00am

In politics, as in life itself, you win some and you lose some.

Congratulations to the Douglas County Republican Party. They were able to do something the Douglas County Democratic Party wished they could have done, but it wouldn’t have happened in their wildest dreams.

The Voters Have Spoken

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Mon, 03/23/2026 - 12:00am

I am the product of a Catholic School education with a little bit of a Public School experience thrown in. I went to Benson when we moved to Omaha my junior year of High School. Prior to that, I spent ten years in Parochial schools. Next to my parents, Sister Marlene had the biggest influence on my young life. (The Beatles were the third biggest influence, but I digress.)

Practical Or Political?

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Fri, 03/20/2026 - 12:00am

I’m not saying that Danielle Jensen, the Douglas County Election Commissioner, made the wrong call when she said that Mark Martinez couldn’t run for Douglas County Sheriff. But I’m not saying it was the right call either. I wonder if her decision was a practical or political one.

If I were a lawyer, I could argue either side in court.

Welcome To The Club

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 03/17/2026 - 12:00am

I used to be a registered Republican. While I rarely voted a straight party ticket, my political beliefs aligned more with the Republicans than the Democrats.

But that was when Republicans were more into fiscal responsibility and less into culture wars.
