The 2020 primary is officially over after the Board of State Canvassers reviewed and approved the results of the statewide primary and a recount confirmed the results of a tight race for the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner Mike Boyle held onto a three-vote lead over challenger Rodger Garcia in a three-way race for the Democratic nomination to represent District 1 on the Douglas County Board.

Boyle received 2,479 votes in a recount, while Garica had 2,476. Another challenger, Tonya Ward, had 1,167 votes. Fifteen write-in votes were also cast in the contest.

Garica conceded the race in a public Facebook post following the recount last Wednesday.

“Well, our democracy played itself out and I trust in our democracy,” Garica said. “Through this extensive process, including a full-blown recount at the end, Commissioner Boyle maintained his 3-vote victory and we accept these final results.”

Garica said he remains interested in representing the South Omaha district in the future.

At the state level, no race qualified for an automatic recount.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen called the primary a success despite the complications associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

“More Nebraskans voted in our 2020 primary in the history of our state.” Evnen said in a statement. “Nebraska voters refused to allow the coronavirus pandemic to prevent them from exercising their right to vote.”
