La Vista – The Nebraska State Bar Association celebrated the contribution of its 50- and 25-year members with a recognition lunch on Oct. 11 near the conclusion of the association’s Annual Meeting.

Outgoing NSBA President J. Scott Paul welcomed the honorees and praised the success of the state bar’s annual gathering.

“We tried to make it like a homecoming weekend – like a football game weekend,” he said. “You’ve got people coming back, seeing people, hopefully, lawyers and friends that they haven’t seen in a long time and having the opportunity to celebrate their practice together as lawyers and also get a little bit of quality CLE.”

Creighton University School of Law Professor Patrick J. Borchers delivered a video presentation that looked at what was happening in the world, Nebraska and the legal profession 50 years ago.

Beyond milestones like the moon landing, 1969 saw the installation of Warren Burger as the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, ending the Warren Court era. Among other cases, the court considered Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community Schools.

“It turned out to be a very important First Amendment case, establishing the right of students to speak without disruption in the school setting,” Borchers said.
