The Nebraska Supreme Court heard oral arguments at Creighton University and Omaha Northwest High School last month. A month later, after the spread of coronavirus to Nebraska, the court held limited arguments using remote technology, which it plans to use again for its next session, beginning April 28.

The justices gave insight into their careers and how to practice to Creighton Law students.

Chief Justice Michael G. Heavican said appellate courts seek to write an opinion that answers the legal questions in a given case. “Suggest to us the way the court can write that opinion in a way that is an outcome that is favorable to your client,” he said.

Justice William B. Cassel urged students to be prepared for whatever their careers take them. “You never know where life is going to take you, so you should do everything you can to prepare yourself for those opportunities that you cannot foresee at the outset of your career,” he said.

 The March 5 sessions were part of the court’s outreach and education efforts. They heard arguments in actual cases and then answered questions from the students.
