Two Family Members of Omaha Woman With Virus Now Have COVID-19

Two family members of an Omaha woman with COVID-19 have now tested positive for the disease, health officials said Sunday.

The Douglas County Health Department said the family members with the disease caused by the new coronavirus have been quarantining themselves at home since Friday when the 36-year-old woman was diagnosed. The woman remains hospitalized in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.

Health officials released few details about the two family members who are infected with COVID-19. Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said other people who had close contact with the woman have tested negative for the disease.

"We expected this to happen," Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said. "This demonstrates the importance of contact investigations and shows how well they work."

There are now three cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska.

The 36-year-old infected Omaha woman tested positive Friday for COVID-19 after being taken to an Omaha emergency room Thursday. Health officials say she had recently traveled to the United Kingdom with her father and first started showing symptoms of a respiratory illness on Feb. 24. She returned to Nebraska on Feb. 27.

Nebraska health officials have asked dozens of people who participated in a Feb. 29 Special Olympics basketball tournament in Fremont to self-quarantine because the woman attended the event. Several health care workers who treated the woman before she was diagnosed have also been asked to self-quarantine themselves for 14 days.

Several institutions in Fremont, including Fremont Public Schools, Archbishop Bergan Catholic Schools, Trinity Lutheran School, and Midland University, canceled or postponed all classes and activities for at least a week as a precaution.
