Imagine that you have lived with an illness for years. The suffering this illness has caused is devastating – so much that you wish to die. You no longer feel like the person you were before. You have been to see specialists, have tried the best treatments, but nothing works.

When I was 11 years old, I started severely restricting my diet and became intensely preoccupied with food. I found myself worrying about gaining weight constantly, and I started pulling away from friends and family.
My grades started slipping, and I no longer had energy for volleyball, which used to be one of my favorite hobbies. I knew there was a problem, but since my weight did not reflect my mindset and actions, I did not know how serious it was getting.

I’m going to tell you a dirty little secret about politics: There are Democrats that are against abortion and Republicans that are pro-choice. Now of course I’m talking about the voters and not the politicians because even if the politicians felt that way, they couldn’t say so in public if they wanted to continue their political career.

Let’s face it.1 Regardless of practice area, if you are a lawyer, you likely have a high stress job. Some of this is self-created, some by our clients, some by opposing counsel, and some of it... Just kidding. You get, and live, the point.

Last week, natural disaster struck Nebraska. Our dry weather and windy days make us especially vulnerable to disasters like wildfires, as Nebraska farmers and ranchers know all too well. Beginning last Monday, a wildfire blazed across 71,000 acres of land in Custer and Lincoln counties over just 24 hours. The fire destroyed several buildings, including primary residences, and forced evacuations in the North Platte area.

Nebraskans know the importance of taking care of each other. This is no more evident than in the approximately 179,000 unpaid family caregivers in our state whose care allows their loved ones to remain at home and helps them avoid unnecessary hospital stays or costly taxpayer-funded institutional care.
Family caregivers are essential to ensuring the safety, quality and sustainability of our long-term care system. While family caregivers provide support out of love, caregiving can create serious emotional strain and financial hardships for many.

Don Bacon held another Town Hall meeting the other day. Regularly getting in front of his constituents has been something Congressman Bacon has done for years. He should be commended for that.

In Nebraska, we never give up on a kid. Our kids are our future. That’s why we need to do everything we can to encourage our young people to get an education, start their careers and put down roots right here in the great state of Nebraska.

In a society where instant gratification is the norm, it may be tough to think about long-term planning and the benefits of delayed gratification. But as investors that is precisely what we should be doing. Taking the time to consider the consequences will almost always benefit us in the long run.
