Omaha’s Streetcar, In Theory

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 07/02/2024 - 7:00am

Before I begin let me state for the record that, in theory, I am a fan of the streetcar.

The, “in theory” part is very important because, in theory, I can see how it will benefit Omaha’s urban core.  In theory, I can see how it’s a starter track that eventually will run to the airport, the zoo, and maybe even to Elkhorn and over the river to Council Bluffs.

Ben Nelson Saw It Coming

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/26/2024 - 7:00am

A few years ago I had the honor to speak with former Senator Ben Nelson.  He was promoting his book “The Death of the Senate.  My front row seat to the demise of the world’s greatest deliberative body.”

Does Pillen Have Something Up His Sleeve?

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Mon, 06/17/2024 - 6:00am

The Governor is planning on calling a special session of the Unicameral later this summer.  He is determined to get his property tax reductions passed come hell or high water.   Also bubbling under the radar is his plan to make Nebraska a “Winner Take All” state when it comes to electoral votes.

David Against Goliath

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/12/2024 - 6:00am

When I was a kid and my sister or brother were allowed to have something or do something I couldn’t, my father said it wasn’t fair.  His go-to response to that every time was, “Life isn’t fair.”

Entrepreneurship Begins With a Mindset

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 05/21/2024 - 3:00am

After 20 years of helping Midwesterners in Nebraska and Iowa make their business ownership dreams a reality, I’ve found that entrepreneurship begins with a certain mindset. My experience as a franchise broker and consultant has taught me that people consider business ownership for various reasons. Some grew up idolizing their own entrepreneurial parents or relatives and want to follow in their footsteps. Others are interested in exploring a career transition to try something new or different for a change.

Can Governor Pillen Lower Nebraska Property Tax?

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 05/02/2024 - 5:00am

Governor Pillen and I have something in common. Neither one of us has a clue on how to pass a 40% reduction in property taxes. The Governor said he was planning on calling a special session of the Unicameral after he failed to get his priority legislation passed this year.

We Don’t Need Voter ID; We Need Voter IQ

It’s About Time.

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 04/25/2024 - 12:05am

The last time I bought a house it took a while. 44 days to be exact. This was strange because it was a house in my neighborhood that I had been in many times before. I knew the schools, I knew the neighbors, and I knew about the light not working in the bathroom if you used the outlet outside. And it still took 44 days. In that 44 days the bank that was loaning me the money had to be sure.

New York Moves To Update Its Fracking Ban To Include Liquid Carbon-Dioxide As Well As Water

Joan and Harold Koster pose for a photo in front of a historic barn on their property, known as Itaska Valley Farm, Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in Whitney Point, N.Y. The Kosters were asked by Texas-based Southern Tier Energy Solutions to lease their land to extract natural gas by injecting carbon dioxide into the ground, which they rejected and are opposed to.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Natural gas drilling companies would be banned in New York from using an extraction method that involves injecting large amounts of liquified carbon dioxide deep underground under a bill moving through the state legislature.

The measure would immediately block a Texas company that wants to use the method as an alternative to hydraulic fracturing with a water-based solution.
