Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 12/07/2022 - 2:00am

Parents, do you feel as if the distance is growing between you and your teenage son or daughter? If the answer is “yes,” that widening gap could be more than a sign that your child is growing away from you.

Preparing Your Cap Tables The Right Way

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 12/06/2022 - 1:00am

“We have kind of a ‘good news, bad news’ problem in our business.

On the one hand, a local angel investor has offered to buy 15% of our company for $300,000.

A Month In, Casino Shows Revenue Potential

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 2:00am

In 2020, proponents of the initiative that would allow casinos at the state’s horseracing tracks made a convincing argument that providing gambling there would keep the cash wagered and the tax dollars it generates in Nebraska rather than seeing it cross the Missouri River to Iowa casinos.

After just a month of operation of one casino, that prediction is bearing out – in millions.

Nebraska Needs To Heal, Not Punish, Physicians With Addictions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 12/02/2022 - 2:00am

The stigma of addiction is alive and destructive in the state of Nebraska.  I am an addict in recovery, and I am a physician. In Nebraska, that is a bad combination because there is a system in place that can destroy careers. The Nebraska Board of Medicine and our legal system aggressively work to punish addicts, not heal.  My intent is to use my story to explain how Nebraska is more punitive than other states and to promote change in the medical and legal systems.

Connecting Nebraska’s Waiting Children With Forever Families

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 12/01/2022 - 2:00am

The family unit plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s life.  A loving home is a tremendous blessing –it’s easy for many of us to take that for granted.  But there are nearly 500 children in Nebraska still waiting on a forever family.  At the State, we are working diligently to find every one of these children a safe, loving home.  I encourage you to consider what you can do to play a part in changing a child’s life through adoption or foster care.

What Is Ethical Animal Research? A Scientist And Veterinarian Explain

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 11/30/2022 - 3:00am

A proposed measure in Switzerland would have made that country the first to ban medical and scientific experimentation on animals. It failed to pass in February 2022, with only 21% of voters in favor. Yet globally, including in the United States, there is concern about whether animal research is ethical.

Nebraska As Fiefdom

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 11/28/2022 - 4:00am

As is the case with the governor of any state in the country, the governor of Nebraska has a great deal of power to set public policy and direct the mechanisms of state government.

As Nebraskans, we’re fortunate to live in a state where we enjoy peace, prosperity, and the blessings of liberty.  As we celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family, there are plenty of reasons to be grateful here in the Good Life.

Evictions And Trusts

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 11/24/2022 - 1:00am

Not long ago, I did a short series on trusts being used by real estate investors. A memo came across my desk recently from a highly-respected eviction attorney in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Municipal Housing Court is now doing something that will probably spread to other states and cities. They are now requiring additional documentation when the owner of the property is a trust and the trustee is doing the eviction. Let me remind you of a couple of things.

FTX Bankruptcy Is Bad News For The Charities That Crypto Mogul Sam Bankman-Fried Generously Supported

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 11/23/2022 - 12:00am

FTX, an exchange for trading cryptocurrencies, quickly became bankrupt and defunct in November 2022. Its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, is broke, and the 30-year-old former billionaire could be in serious legal trouble for his alleged financial improprieties. The Conversation asked Brian Mittendorf, an accounting scholar at The Ohio State University, to explain the significance of FTX’s implosion for philanthropy and the nonprofits Bankman-Fried supported.
