Nebraska Unemployment Claims Spike

Lincoln – The state’s initial claims for unemployment benefits skyrocketed last week with the rest of the nation’s amid the coronavirus pandemic. The claims rose to nearly 16,000 from a little less than 800 the week before, according to a report released last Thursday.

Mental Health Info Available for Attorneys

Washington – Resources to aid attorneys dealing with the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health have been compiled by the American Bar Association.

DHHS Launches Dashboard

Lincoln – The state Department of Health and Human Services will now provide daily updates to the state’s COVID-19 case totals via its new data dashboard at dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Coronavirus, instead of via an evening news release.

Owe Child Support? COVID-19 Rebate Check May Be Reduced

Washington – The U.S. government plans to offer $1,200 rebates to taxpayers to provide financial assistance during the pandemic.

Sen. Charles Grasley, R-Iowa, said in a post on Medium that one administrative offset will remain in effect for the COVID-12 rebate: overdue child support payments.

Some Electronic Petitions Now Accepted by Tax Commissioner

Lincoln – The tax commissioner has implemented an electronic method for taxpayers to file a Petitions for Redetermination.

This applies to Notices of Deficiency Determinations issued by the Nebraska Department of Revenue. It does not apply to protests or appeals filed with the Property Assessment Division.

ILC Closes Office Due to Virus

Immigrant Legal Center employees are working from home after the Nebraska nonprofit closed its doors to the public March 26.

Attorneys will reach out to clients to reschedule appointments as necessary and will continue to attend scheduled court hearings. All client service-related deadlines will continue to be met.

Judicial Branch Delays Two Tribal Engagement Sessions

Lincoln – The March 2020 Nebraska court engagement sessions with Native American community members were postponed.

The sessions were scheduled for March 23 in Scottsbluff and March 24, in Rushville. The decision to postpone these community events is made in cooperation with non-essential travel limitations due to the possible spread of COVID-19.

ICAN Reschedules Women’s Leadership Event to Aug. 19

The 2020 ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19. All registrations, sponsorships and exhibitors for the May 13 date will be transferred and honored.

The Institute for Career Advancement Needs is an Omaha-based leadership development organization that hosts networking and team building events for local and national businesses.

Police Officer Has COVID-19

An Omaha police officer is among those who have tested positive for the new coronavirus in Nebraska, officials said last week.

A news release from the Omaha Police Department said the officer had recently traveled out of state on vacation and self-quarantined upon return. The officer, whose name wasn’t released March 26, had not returned to work since the trip.

Police Foundation Postpones Officer of the Year Luncheon

The Omaha Police Foundation has postponed its 20th Annual Police Officer of the Year Luncheon due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The luncheon was scheduled for April 23. A rescheduled luncheon is being planned for the fall.
